A Free Press In China Could Have Prevented A Global Pandemic

Tuesday, April 21, 2020

Strongman leaders around the world are criticizing China for censoring the early coverage of the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan China, informing CNN Business that the coronavirus pandemic could have been lessened or even prevented if journalists in China had more freedom to speak out.

The RSF's Uk bureau director Rebecca Vincent informed CNN Business that 'If there had been a free press in China, if these whistle blowers hadn't been silenced, then this could have been prevented from turning into a pandemic''.

Chinese politicians have downplayed the importance and severity of the coronavirus (covid-19) in its early weeks, by activating censors which immediately deleted any comments and posts spreading rumors and questioning the official line. Wuhan's mayor Zhou Xianwang later responded saying that he understood that the public was ''unsatisfied with our information disclosure''.

Vincent also commented that ''reporting the truth at the earliest possible moment would have allowed the rest of the world to react probably earlier and probably more seriously''.

Despite countless interactions, the Chinese embassy in the United States did not respond to the CNN Business' request for comment about the current situation.
